What d4 means on a Zone Air

The condensate level in the indoor unit is too high. The unit stops cooling so it does not overflow.

On this platform, d4 is a protection: the system stopped or throttled itself to prevent damage; many clear on their own once conditions return to normal.

Common causes

  • A blocked or kinked condensate drain line.
  • A drain line without continuous fall, holding water.
  • A failed condensate pump (if fitted).
  • A failed float switch.

How to fix it yourself

You can almost always clear this yourself with the steps below.

  1. Find the drain line outlet outside and check that water flows when cooling.
  2. Clear the drain with a wet/dry vacuum at the outlet, or flush it.
  3. Make sure the drain line falls continuously with no dips.
  4. If a condensate pump is fitted, check it runs and its float moves freely.

Switch off power at the breaker before opening either unit. Capacitors in the outdoor unit hold a charge for several minutes after power is cut.

Zone Air's own documentation lists d4 as "Water-full (drain) protection", the same definition used across the TCL platform it is built on. Can I reset a Zone Air d4 code myself?

Yes. Turn the system off at the breaker for five minutes, then restart it. If d4 comes back, the fault is real and needs the checks above.

Is it safe to keep running a Zone Air showing d4?
