What d4 means on a TCL
The condensate level in the indoor unit is too high. The unit stops cooling so it does not overflow.
On this platform, d4 is a protection: the system stopped or throttled itself to prevent damage; many clear on their own once conditions return to normal.
Common causes
- A blocked or kinked condensate drain line.
- A drain line without continuous fall, holding water.
- A failed condensate pump (if fitted).
- A failed float switch.
How to fix it yourself
You can almost always clear this yourself with the steps below.
- Find the drain line outlet outside and check that water flows when cooling.
- Clear the drain with a wet/dry vacuum at the outlet, or flush it.
- Make sure the drain line falls continuously with no dips.
- If a condensate pump is fitted, check it runs and its float moves freely.
Switch off power at the breaker before opening either unit. Capacitors in the outdoor unit hold a charge for several minutes after power is cut.
When to call a technician
A technician can replace a failed pump or float switch.
Which TCL units show d4
This page applies to TCL TCL Elite, TCL Ocarina, TCL FreshIN and TCL TAC series units. TCL's own documentation lists d4 as "Water-full (drain) protection", the same definition used across the TCL platform it is built on. If your unit shows a code with a different shape (for example a four-character code, or a plain number), it is from a different table; use the lookup with your exact code.
Where TCL shows this code
The indoor display shows the code in place of the set temperature. E codes are faults: something has failed and needs diagnosis. P, H, d and F codes are protections: the system stopped or throttled itself to prevent damage, and many clear on their own once conditions return to normal.
Other TCL codes
d4 on other brands
The same characters do not always mean the same thing. Check the brand on your unit.

Questions people ask
Can I reset a TCL d4 code myself?
Yes. Turn the system off at the breaker for five minutes, then restart it. If d4 comes back, the fault is real and needs the checks above.
Is it safe to keep running a TCL showing d4?
Not repeatedly. A protection code means the unit stopped itself to prevent damage, and resetting it over and over can turn a cheap repair into a compressor failure. Reset once, check the basics, and stop if it returns.
Do I need a technician for TCL d4?
You can almost always clear this yourself with the steps below. A technician can replace a failed pump or float switch.
