What P3 means on a KeepRite
The outdoor temperature is below the unit's rated operating range, so the board is holding the compressor off to protect it. This is normal behavior, not a fault, on units that are not rated for your climate.
On this platform, P3 is a protection: the system stopped or throttled itself to prevent damage; many clear on their own once conditions return to normal.
Common causes
- Outdoor temperature below the unit's heating (or cooling) limit.
- The outdoor ambient sensor (T4) reading far too low, faking a cold snap.
How to fix it yourself
You can almost always clear this yourself with the steps below.
- Check the rated operating range in your manual. Many base-model units stop heating around 5°F and stop cooling below about 32°F to 40°F.
- Wait for the temperature to come back into range; the unit resumes on its own.
- If it is not actually that cold outside, suspect the T4 ambient sensor (see F1).
Switch off power at the breaker before opening either unit. Capacitors in the outdoor unit hold a charge for several minutes after power is cut.
