What E:97 means on a Ruud
The outdoor fan is stalled, failing, or not reporting its speed. The compressor stops.
On this platform, E:97 is a fault: something has failed or is disconnected and needs diagnosis.
Common causes
- Ice, snow, leaves or debris blocking the fan.
- A failed motor.
- A loose fan connector.
How to fix it yourself
Work through the checks below first; they resolve most cases. If they do not, the repair itself may need a technician.
- Reset the system: switch the breaker (or the outdoor disconnect) off, wait a full five minutes so the boards fully discharge, then switch it back on and restart from the remote.
- Look at the outdoor unit: clear leaves, cottonwood fluff, snow or ice from the coil and make sure the fan can spin freely and nothing is stacked against the cabinet.
- With power off, spin the fan by hand; it should turn freely.
- Reseat the fan motor connector.
Switch off power at the breaker before opening either unit. Capacitors in the outdoor unit hold a charge for several minutes after power is cut.

This page applies to Ruud Classic and Classic Plus wall-mount (RIWH / ROWH / UIWH / UOWH), Endeavor Line multi-zone and Floating Air series (2023 and later) units on the Classic / Classic Plus (RIWH / ROWH, Fujitsu-built). Ruud's own documentation lists E:97 as "Outdoor fan motor fault", the same definition used across the Fujitsu General it is built on. If your unit shows a code with a different shape (for example a four-character code, or a plain number), it is from a different table; use the lookup with your exact code.

Classic / Classic Plus (RIWH / ROWH, Fujitsu-built): Units with a display show the code as E:xx (E:41). Wall units without one flash the Operation and Timer lamps: count the Operation flashes for the first digit and the Timer flashes for the second, so 4 Operation flashes then 1 Timer flash is E:41. A wired controller shows the code directly. 1x codes are communication faults, 2x are configuration and combination errors, 3x and 4x are indoor board, sensor and fan faults, 6x and 7x are outdoor board and sensor faults, 9x are compressor and fan faults, and Ax codes are temperature and pressure protections.

Can I reset a Ruud E:97 code myself?
Yes. Turn the system off at the breaker for five minutes, then restart it. If E:97 comes back, the fault is real and needs the checks above.
Is it safe to keep running a Ruud showing E:97?
