What E:A5 means on a Rheem
Suction pressure fell below the limit. Usually low charge or a restriction.
On this platform, E:A5 is a protection: the system stopped or throttled itself to prevent damage; many clear on their own once conditions return to normal.
Common causes
- Low charge from a leak.
- A service valve not fully open.
- A kinked line set.
- A frozen indoor coil.
How to fix it yourself
Work through the checks below first; they resolve most cases. If they do not, the repair itself may need a technician.
- Open both service valves fully.
- Pull the front panel and check the filters and the indoor coil. Dirty filters and a matted coil restrict airflow, and airflow problems trigger a surprising number of protection codes.
- Leak-check the flare joints.
- Anything inside the refrigerant circuit (sensors are fine, but valves, compressors and leaks are not) needs EPA-certified refrigerant handling. That is a technician job.
Switch off power at the breaker before opening either unit. Capacitors in the outdoor unit hold a charge for several minutes after power is cut.

This page applies to Rheem Classic and Classic Plus wall-mount (RIWH / ROWH), Endeavor Line multi-zone and Floating Air series (2023 and later) units on the Classic / Classic Plus (RIWH / ROWH, Fujitsu-built). Rheem's own documentation lists E:A5 as "Low pressure protection", the same definition used across the Fujitsu General it is built on. If your unit shows a code with a different shape (for example a four-character code, or a plain number), it is from a different table; use the lookup with your exact code.

Classic / Classic Plus (RIWH / ROWH, Fujitsu-built): Units with a display show the code as E:xx (E:41). Wall units without one flash the Operation and Timer lamps: count the Operation flashes for the first digit and the Timer flashes for the second, so 4 Operation flashes then 1 Timer flash is E:41. A wired controller shows the code directly. 1x codes are communication faults, 2x are configuration and combination errors, 3x and 4x are indoor board, sensor and fan faults, 6x and 7x are outdoor board and sensor faults, 9x are compressor and fan faults, and Ax codes are temperature and pressure protections.

Can I reset a Rheem E:A5 code myself?
Yes. Turn the system off at the breaker for five minutes, then restart it. If E:A5 comes back, the fault is real and needs the checks above.
Is it safe to keep running a Rheem showing E:A5?
