Common causes

• A blocked drain line.
• A failed pump.
• A stuck float switch.

How to fix it yourself

Work through the checks below first; they resolve most cases. If they do not, the repair itself may need a technician.

1. Clear the drain line at the outlet.
2. With power off, reseat the pump connector.
3. Listen for the pump running when the unit cools.

Switch off power at the breaker before opening either unit. Capacitors in the outdoor unit hold a charge for several minutes after power is cut.

Which Rheem units show E:53

This page applies to Rheem Classic and Classic Plus wall-mount (RIWH / ROWH), Endeavor Line multi-zone and Floating Air series (2023 and later) units on the Classic / Classic Plus (RIWH / ROWH, Fujitsu-built). Rheem's own documentation lists E:53 as "Drain pump fault", the same definition used across the Fujitsu General it is built on. If your unit shows a code with a different shape (for example a four-character code, or a plain number), it is from a different table; use the lookup with your exact code.

Where Rheem shows this code

Classic / Classic Plus (RIWH / ROWH, Fujitsu-built): Units with a display show the code as E:xx (E:41). Wall units without one flash the Operation and Timer lamps: count the Operation flashes for the first digit and the Timer flashes for the second, so 4 Operation flashes then 1 Timer flash is E:41. A wired controller shows the code directly. 1x codes are communication faults, 2x are configuration and combination errors, 3x and 4x are indoor board, sensor and fan faults, 6x and 7x are outdoor board and sensor faults, 9x are compressor and fan faults, and Ax codes are temperature and pressure protections.
