Ducane mini split error code F5

Common causes

• The fan is blocked by ice, snow, leaves or debris.
• The motor bearings are worn or the motor has failed.
• The fan motor connector is loose or its wiring is damaged.
• The fan drive circuit on the outdoor board has failed.

How to fix it yourself

Work through the checks below first; they resolve most cases. If they do not, the repair itself may need a technician.

1. Reset the system: switch the breaker (or the outdoor disconnect) off, wait a full five minutes so the boards fully discharge, then switch it back on and restart from the remote.
2. Look at the outdoor unit: clear leaves, cottonwood fluff, snow or ice from the coil and make sure the fan can spin freely and nothing is stacked against the cabinet.
3. With power off, spin the outdoor fan by hand. It should turn freely with no grinding or wobble.
4. Reseat the fan motor connector on the outdoor board.
5. In heating mode in winter, ice on the fan blades after a defrost cycle can trigger this; let it thaw and retest.

Switch off power at the breaker before opening either unit. Capacitors in the outdoor unit hold a charge for several minutes after power is cut.

When to call a technician

Outdoor fan motors are replaceable but sit next to high-voltage inverter components. Call a technician if the fan spins freely and the connector is tight but the code persists.

This page applies to Ducane 4DHV outdoor with DWH wall-mount indoor (2016 and later) units. Ducane's own documentation lists F5 as "Outdoor fan speed out of control (outdoor fan motor fault)", the same definition used across the Midea platform (classic codes) it is built on. If your unit shows a code with a different shape (for example a four-character code, or a plain number), it is from a different table; use the lookup with your exact code.

Where Ducane shows this code

The code appears on the indoor unit's LED display in place of the set temperature. Some models also blink the indicator lamps in a pattern that matches the code. E codes are faults in the indoor unit or its communication link, F codes are faults on the outdoor side, and P codes are protections: the outdoor unit has stopped itself to prevent damage. EC is the refrigerant leak check.
