Common causes

• Low charge from a leak or an incomplete installation charge.
• A service valve not fully open.
• A kinked or restricted line set.
• A frozen indoor coil in cooling mode.
• A failed low-pressure switch.

How to fix it yourself

Work through the checks below first; they resolve most cases. If they do not, the repair itself may need a technician.

1. Open both service valves fully.
2. Pull the front panel and check the filters and the indoor coil. Dirty filters and a matted coil restrict airflow, and airflow problems trigger a surprising number of protection codes.
3. If the indoor coil is iced, run Fan-only until it thaws.
4. Leak-check every flare joint with soapy water while the system runs.
5. Anything inside the refrigerant circuit (sensors are fine, but valves, compressors and leaks are not) needs EPA-certified refrigerant handling. That is a technician job.

Switch off power at the breaker before opening either unit. Capacitors in the outdoor unit hold a charge for several minutes after power is cut.

When to call a technician

A technician must measure the charge and find the leak before adding refrigerant.

• Something is jamming the blower wheel (debris, a broken louver, a bent housing).
• The blower wheel is caked with dirt and too heavy to reach speed.
• The DC fan motor is failing or its feedback wire is loose or damaged.
• The motor drive circuit on the indoor board has failed.

How to fix it yourself

1. Reset the system: switch the breaker (or the outdoor disconnect) off, wait a full five minutes so the boards fully discharge, then switch it back on and restart from the remote.
2. With power off, open the front panel, remove the filters and spin the blower wheel by hand. It should turn freely and silently.
3. Clear anything caught in the wheel and clean heavy dirt off the blades (a build-up throws the wheel out of balance and overloads the motor).
4. Reseat the fan motor connector on the indoor board.
5. Restart. If the fan hums but does not spin, or spins briefly and stops, the motor is the likely fault.
