What P8 means on a Ameristar
The outdoor temperature is outside the unit's rated operating range, so the compressor is held off. Normal for the conditions, not a fault.
On this platform, P8 is a protection: the system stopped or throttled itself to prevent damage; many clear on their own once conditions return to normal.
Common causes
- Outdoor temperature beyond the rated range.
- The outdoor ambient sensor (see E7) reading wrong.
How to fix it yourself
You can almost always clear this yourself with the steps below.
- Check the rated operating range in your manual and wait for conditions to return to it.
- If it is not actually that hot or cold, suspect the ambient sensor.
Switch off power at the breaker before opening either unit. Capacitors in the outdoor unit hold a charge for several minutes after power is cut.
